Ratatan vs Patapon
Ratatan.pro editorial team · Updated 2026-10-16
Is Ratatan Patapon 4?
No. In the 14 October 2026 full-release announcement, Ratatan's producer describes it as a new title with its own world, characters and gameplay. The same announcement includes game designer Hiroyuki Kotani's launch message. Similar rhythm-command battles do not make Ratatan a numbered Patapon sequel.
The Patapon edition compared below is PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY, not every release in the series. Bandai Namco's official REPLAY overview describes the first two games remastered together. Both REPLAY and Ratatan have official Steam listings; Ratatan is not the only PC option for rhythm-command army combat. Sources checked on .
Mechanics and multiplayer side by side
Sources for this table: Ratatan's official gameplay description, the Full Release FAQ (marked updated 13 October 2026), the 16 October developer update, and REPLAY's official gameplay description and Steam features.
| Feature | Ratatan | PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY |
|---|---|---|
| Rhythm commands | Rhythm sequences direct Cobuns during side-scrolling battles. | Four drums form commands for a Patapon army. |
| Positioning and strategy | Freely move the Ratatan leader and decide where to issue orders or retreat. | Choose battle commands and combine classes with different roles, such as shields and bows. |
| Progression | A rhythm roguelike: defeated adventures restart; Dock and Support Desk upgrades and stronger equipment help later attempts. | Stage-based army development: collect materials to create or enhance Patapons and equip the squad. The official overview does not describe a roguelike run structure. |
| Solo play | Offline single-player; the FAQ says all content can be played alone. | Single-player is listed on Steam. |
| Co-op | Up to four players online; no local co-op on one system. | No co-op feature is listed for this Steam edition. Do not infer the original games' multiplayer features carry over. |
| Crossplay | The 16 October update says work and platform approval remain; no launch date is committed. | Not a crossplay alternative: this edition is listed as single-player. |
| Support options | Welcome Mode eases early adventures; the FAQ says it is disabled in co-op. | Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty, input-timing adjustment and an always-visible drum icon option. |
Crossplay: the newer announcement conflicts with the FAQ
The older Full Release FAQ claims crossplay between Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, with PlayStation 5 support planned. However, Upcoming Bug Fixes and Updates, published 16 October 2026, says crossplay across those four platforms is still being worked on, requires platform approval and has no committed launch date.
This is conflicting official documentation, not evidence of a working platform-pair matrix. The newer announcement takes precedence for this buying advice: do not assume cross-platform matchmaking is available. Ratatan's online co-op feature is distinct from crossplay. Check a newer official confirmation before buying on different systems for a group; the multiplayer guide covers session requirements.
Which one should you choose?
Choose PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY if the priority is a solo campaign built around drum commands, army classes and equipment. Its timing and difficulty options are documented by Bandai Namco. It is the direct choice for revisiting the first two Patapon games, rather than seeking a new roguelike interpretation.
Choose Ratatan if freely positioning a leader, repeating adventures with upgrades or playing online with up to four people matters more. Offline solo play is also an option; co-op is not compulsory. This recommendation follows the documented feature differences, not a claim that either game has been played or performance-tested for this article.
For other directions, the three-game alternatives guide compares Hi-Fi RUSH's character action and Crypt of the NecroDancer's dungeon runs with REPLAY. Use Ratatan's official store links for current regional prices rather than assuming matching prices or editions across platforms.

Questions
Is Ratatan a numbered Patapon sequel?
No. The official full-release announcement describes Ratatan as a new title with its own world, characters and gameplay. PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY is the remastered collection of the first two Patapon games.
Can PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY replace Ratatan for online co-op?
No. REPLAY's Steam listing is single-player. Ratatan supports up to four players online, but not local co-op on one system.
Is Ratatan crossplay confirmed as working?
Do not assume so. The 16 October 2026 developer update says crossplay is still being worked on and needs platform approval, without a committed date. This conflicts with the older FAQ's partial-support claim.
Is Patapon a roguelike like Ratatan?
For PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY, the official description centers on stages, collecting materials, and building and equipping an army, not a roguelike run structure. Ratatan is explicitly described as a rhythm roguelike.
